FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our Oregon mediation training program, including course structure, accreditation, certification, and the steps required to become a private or court-connected mediator in Oregon.

After successful completion of the program you will qualify as an IMI qualified mediator and become accredited by Phoenix Dispute Solutions. You will receive certification as a fully-qualified mediator which will allow you to start conducting mediations, gain experience and build your practice.

Professionals who complete the course will fulfil the education and training requirements developed by the Oregon Dispute Resolution Commission and set out in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR Chapter 718).

The course is 40-hours long and can be completed over three different time-frames:

  • 5 days (full-day sessions everyday Monday-Friday)

  • 5 weeks (one full-day session every week)

  • 8 weeks (one four-hour session every weekend)

Our staggered courses allow professionals the flexibility to become mediators without compromising on important work commitments.

Our standard mediation training course initiates trainees with different kinds of disputes including civil/commercial, work-place, family and inheritance. Accordingly, trainees from any background can use the course to specialize as mediators in their respective fields or choose to develop a more general practice.

In Oregon there is no government certification provided by the state for the practice of mediation. Therefore, completion of this course qualifies you to become a mediator. It provides the learning and accreditations necessary be able to develop your mediation practice. After completion of the course, you can proceed to receive instructions and start developing your experience and resume.

Where the state does provide some guidance on mediation training is minimum standards for mediators to qualify for various court mediation panels. These guidelines are developed by the Oregon Dispute Resolution Commission and set out in the Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 718). This course fulfils the criteria provided therein. You can therefore apply to your local court mediation panel to receive court referred mediations after the completion of the training (subject to you fulfilling any further local requirements).

A number of courts in Oregon offer mediation as an alternative to litigation in a variety of practice areas. These individual courts have established their own criteria for listing a mediator as a member of their roster. Completing this course fulfils the training criteria for the majority of these courts. However, each court may have additional requirements that will concern your experience as a mediator and profession. For example some districts in Oregon may require non-attorney mediators to have completed at least five mediations before becoming eligible for their panel. If you plan to try to mediate in such court settings, it is best to contact that court to determine their requirements.

Testimonials

Proven Results, Trusted by Professionals

"I had the pleasure of receiving my mediator's certification through Phoenix Dispute Solutions. The materials and lessons were helpful and well prepared, but not overly tedious. The instructors were knowledgeable and shared their experiences readily. I am very glad I chose PDS and feel I am now very well prepared for practice."

Leah Capece Attorney

“Last year, I needed to get mediation training. I did some research and came across Phoenix Dispute Solutions. I had some reservations about whether mediation training could be done via Zoom. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I kept an open mind… I was very pleasantly surprised! All of the speakers were excellent. They were incredibly knowledgeable. They really wanted to share their craft. They truly cared about all of us. Their critiques were thoughtful and very helpful. I cannot think of a better training - and I have been to a lot of them! I strongly recommend PDS!”

Michael Burton (Retired Judge)

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, despite the fact that the time difference meant I worked from 12:00am to 8:00am. The program was well put together, and I also enjoyed the interactions with the fellow cohorts. One thing if I may suggest, it would have been enormously helpful to see yourself and the instructor do an example mediation.”

Frances Sinha

“Phoenix were incredibly helpful and easy to work with – nothing was too much trouble for them. I found the 5 weekly sessions easier to accommodate within my practice than taking a whole week out. The course materials were of a high-quality, and the trainer was very knowledgeable, patient and clear in her presentation. I would recommend them to anyone thinking of training as a mediator.”

Attorney

“PDSL provided a comprehensive training solution to becoming a mediator. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable, patient and go above and beyond to make sure everyone gets the support they need. I highly recommend PDSL!”

Dana Glass Human Resources

“PDSL was the perfect certification process. It provided an online option that was flexible and very professional. All of the facilitators are knowledgeable and thorough instructors. I would recommend PDSL for those veterans in the field of mediation to brush up on their skills and for those who are just beginning. PDSL also offered a monthly payment option which was very helpful.”
